Whether you want to follow one of Scotland’s great trails or enjoy more leisurely strolls in the country and along the coastline, Scotland’s magnificent and varied landscape makes for some excellent walking opportunities and a walking holiday is one of the best ways of appreciating the country.

Follow one of Scotland’s great trails for the remarkable scenery and sense of achievement at the end of your walk. You could walk the West Highland Way, Great Glen Way, Speyside Way or Southern Upland Way. Other popular options include the Moray Coastal Trail and the Fife Coastal Path. You can walk the entire distance or complete a section of your chosen trail. All of these trails are waymarked and are easily accessible.

Sample Itinerary – Fife Coastal Path

Day 1

Arrive at your accommodation in Aberdour, the village at the north end of the famous Forth Bridges, the gateway to the Kingdom of Fife. Overnight Aberdour.

Day 2

Walk from Aberdour to Dysart (15km / 9.5 miles). Todays highlights include blue flag beaches, seals basking on rocks, pebbled beaches with marine fossils, Ravenscraig Castle and Dysart Harbour. The Harbourmaster’ House in Fife’s first coastal centre with a bistro and headquarters of Fife Coast and Countryside Trust. Overnight Kirkcaldy.

Day 3

Walk from Dysart to Lundin Links (18km / 11 miles). Sights enroute today include the iconic head frame of Francis Colliery, harking back to the rich history of coal mining in the area, Wemyss Castle where Mary Queen of Scots is said to have met Lord Darnley, and the Wemyss Caves with Pictish carvings. Overnight Lundin Links.

Day 4

Walk from Lundin Links to Anstruther (21kms / 13 miles). Attractions today include the statue of Alexander Selkirk, inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, the dunes of Dumbarnie Wildlife Reserve, the low-tide scramble over the Chainwalk near Elie isn’t for the feint hearted, the cliff-top option proffers stunning views back round Largo Bay. Pass Elie Lighthouse and continue towards the fishing villages of the East Neuk. Overnight Anstruther.

Day 5

Walk from Anstruther to Kingsbarns (16.5kms / 10 miles). Highlights today include the Caiple CAves, 17th century Crail Harbour, Kilminning Coast Wildlife Reserve, and Fife Ness. The section of the path at Randerston Cliffs should only be attenpted at low tide. Overnight Kingsbarns.

Day 6

Walk from Kingsbarns to Guardbridge (20kms / 12.5 miles). Today you undertake the roughest section of the Coastal Path, which should be tackled at low tide. Highlights today include rugged rock formations, blue flag beaches and the town of St Andrews. Overnight Guardbridge.

Day 7

Walk from Guardbridge to Dundee (21kms / 13 miles). Attractions today include the 12th century Romanesque Chruch in Leuchars, Tentsmuir Forst, Kinshaldy Beach and the Tay Bridge. Overnight Dundee.
