Day 1 – Arrival in Edinburgh
Begin your West Highland rail adventure with time in Scotland’s historic capital, Edinburgh. Wander the cobbled streets of the Old Town and explore highlights such as Edinburgh Castle, dramatically perched above the city on an extinct volcanic rock. Also recommended is a visit to Dean Village, Stockbridge or head down to Leith where you will find a selection of restaurants and bars to enjoy by the water. Overnight Edinburgh area.
Day 2 – Edinburgh to Stirling
Today travel by train to the historic city of Stirling, once the strategic heart of Scotland’s medieval kingdom. Visit Stirling Castle, one of the country’s most important royal residences, where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned. For panoramic views across the surrounding countryside you may wish to climb the National Wallace Monument which commemorates the legendary Scottish hero William Wallace. Overnight Edinburgh area.
Day 3 – Edinburgh to Oban
Board the train for one of Scotland’s most scenic rail journeys as you travel west through ever-changing landscapes of lochs, forests and open Highland scenery towards the coastal town of Oban. Known as the “Gateway to the Isles”, Oban sits on a sheltered bay looking out across the Hebrides. Spend the afternoon strolling along the harbour, sampling fresh seafood, or visiting the hilltop McCaig’s Tower for wonderful views over the town and islands beyond. Overnight Oban.
Day 4 – Exploring Oban and the Inner Hebrides
Today is free to explore Oban and its beautiful island surroundings. You may wish to take a ferry excursion to the Isle of Mull, famous for its colourful harbour town of Tobermory and abundant wildlife. More adventurous travellers can continue to the tiny island of Iona, one of Scotland’s most important spiritual sites. Overnight Oban.
Day 5 – Oban to Fort William
Travel north by train along the spectacular West Highland Line to Fort William, passing lochs, mountains and remote Highland landscapes along the way. Located at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, Fort William is often referred to as the “Outdoor Capital of the UK”. Spend the afternoon exploring the town, walking along the shores of Loch Linnhe or learning about Highland history at the nearby West Highland Museum. Overnight Fort William.
Day 6 – The Glenfinnan Viaduct and Mallaig
Today you may choose to take the famous Jacobite Steam Train known worldwide for its appearance in the Harry Potter films. Alternatively, travel on the regular train service as the line winds through some of Scotland’s most dramatic scenery. The highlight is crossing the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, overlooking Loch Shiel, before continuing to the fishing port of Mallaig, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and views towards the Isle of Skye before returning to Fort William later in the day. Day 7 – Fort William to Glasgow
Journey south by train to the vibrant city of Glasgow, Scotland’s cultural powerhouse known for its Victorian architecture and thriving arts scene. Visit the magnificent Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, home to an eclectic collection ranging from European masterpieces to natural history displays. Afterwards, explore the lively West End, browse independent shops or enjoy dinner in one of the city’s excellent restaurants. Overnight Glasgow.
Day 8 – Departure
Your Scottish rail adventure comes to an end today as you depart Glasgow or continue your onward travels.
