Family Adventure 7,10 & 14 nights North
Route – Banagher – Carrick on Shannon and return
River Shannon / Suck & Lough Ree
Starting out from Banagher, explore the shops and restaurants which are less than a 5 minute walk from the marina, stock up with your provisions before boarding your cruiser by shopping at the local big supermarket or if you want to rent some fishing equipment call to Ray at the Old Forge. Take the heritage trail around the town with plenty of interesting buildings and facts. If you are spending the night you have the lovely choice of Flynn’s Restaurant and the Brosna Lodge which are very children friendly or check out the Van House for tasty and affordable meals, have a pint of the local beer, Bo Bristle, in some of the pubs and enjoy the Irish session and craic in Hough’s pub which is definitely worth a visit. There is a playground close to the harbour to keep the children entertained.
Cruise northwards and stop off at Shannonbridge and have a bite to eat in the lovely setting of the Old Forte Restaurant or grab some pub food in Luker’s or Killeen’s while enjoying a pint of Guinness and chatting to the locals and getting some good fishing tips or just relax and listen to the Irish music. If you fancy some local crafts browse the display of Shannonbridge pottery which is on sale in Killeen’s. Explore the playground which is in the town and take the free short self- guided walk around the old Napoleonic fort. Before you hit Clonmacnoise, there is an opportunity to cruise along the idyllic River Suck to Ballinasloe, it’s a great river for fishing and Ballinasloe hosts the oldest horse fair which takes place in October. It’s an old market town and has plenty of opportunity to shop and visit the pubs & restaurants. Continuing back down the River Suck and upstream it will be the famous world heritage site of Clonmacnoise that is noticeable from the shore line, stop here for a few hours and take a tour of the monastic site and watch the audio-visual but before coming back on board take a look around the gift shop which is located in the local tourist information situated outside the visitor centre as they have plenty of local arts and crafts on sale. Clonmacnoise is a lovely location, perfect for a BBQ or picnic and a great spot for fishing but just make sure you have enough provisions on board as there is no town close by.
Hop back on board and cruise to Athlone, this is where you will have your first experience of a lock. But no need to worry as the all the locks on the Shannon are operated by lock keepers so always there to lend a hand. Athlone is a great town with plenty of choice of great pubs, restaurants, shops and shopping centres. Sean’s bar, the oldest pub in Ireland is conveniently located beside the lock so pop in for a pint of Guinness or listen to the Irish music. Plenty of activities to keep you entertained from bowling, swimming to the cinema and of course Athlone Castle and Heritage Museum is worth a visit. Take a trip around Glendeer Pet Farm for a fantastic family day out. A lovely child friendly restaurant is IL-Colosseo serving pizza, pasta etc located close to the marina. Cruise to the lower end of Lough Ree you will find the harbour of Hodson Bay, a great fun day can be had here at Bay Sports with plenty of water activities and a water park, avail of the ½ summer camps with Bay sports while Mum & Dad just relax in the hotel or treat themselves to a treatment in the hotel spa overlooking the harbour. Bay sports also offer a great facility of bicycle hire and collection so you can explore the lovely countryside and routes and a great family activity day. On the other side of the lake, is the lovely Coosan Point or Killinure marina where you can enjoy a great steak at the Chalet Restaurant or treat yourself and dine at the Wineport Lodge and Restaurant. If you are feeling active or would like a bike ride take the 2km trip to the picturesque village of Glasson, plenty of choice for arts & crafts, and fine cuisine from Grogan’s, The Fatted Calf to the Village Restaurant. A driving range is located in the stunning Glasson Golf Hotel and wonderful setting for lunch or dinner and they have their own private moorings.
Continue your journey over Lough Ree, plenty of open water but always make sure and follow your charts which are supplied to you on arrival. Cruise up the idyllic Lecarrow Canal to Lecarrow which is a small village but have a bite to eat in the Yew Tree and then across the road to Coffey’s or Kelly’s for an after dinner drink. Explore the looped walks around the area. Back on the lake continue to Lanesborough, a town where you can pick up a few supplies or spend the night and relax after your day’s adventure over the lake.
Take to the wheel again and back on the Shannon exploring the smaller villages and picturesque towns of Clondra, sample some food in Keenan’s or the Purple Onion in Tarmonbarry, next port of call is Rooskey it’s famous for its angling and the Shannon River Adventure is close by, some lovely walking trails for all the family. Continuing a little further to Dromod in Co. Leitrim, where there are pubs and restaurants to choose from, the lively Cox’s to the old docking house that is now a Bistro, a great nature trail and the railway museum offers tours on a stream train. Jamestown is a pretty village, a great spot for fishing and some lovely restaurants too, the famous Cottage Restaurant is highly recommended and plenty of pubs for evening entertainment. Another lovely heritage trail can be enjoyed by many while walking & exploring the town.
Continue on to the bustling town of Carrick on Shannon, the town itself is surrounded by lovely scenery and it’s full of entertainment and lively atmosphere with a great choice of pubs and fine restaurants. Carrick offers an array on activities from the Farmers Market which takes place every Thursday to St George’s Heritage & visitor centre, plenty of water sports available at River Mania which is located beside the marina, golf and great shopping. A visit to the Dock Arts centre is a must , it has a theatre and art galleries and there are many exhibitions and performances hosted throughout the year, browse through Leitrim Design centre and pick up some local and beautifully crafted designs, the Docks is full of culture and local crafts.
It will be here that you begin your return journey back to Banagher taking in the wonderful landscape on your nautical journey.
Depending on your time schedule you may have the possibility of reaching Lough Key within your week tour, Lough Key is to the northeast of the town of Boyle in Co. Roscommon contains over thirty wooded islands including Castle Island, Stay Island, Burlock Island & Drommound Island, a great place for trout and coarse fishing. It is an idyllic lake as it is encircled by 800 acres of Lough Key Forest & Activity Park which is great for families and plenty of activities to keep the children entertained with lovely walks and Ireland’s only Tree canopy Walk & Zipit forest adventure centre. Boyle is a lively town with plenty of pubs and restaurants and the Boyle Arts Festival takes place in July, there is also a model railway which is ideal for children. During the summer months, there is a shuttle service between Boyle and Lough Key forest park.
Route – Banagher to the Shannon Erne and return
River Shannon / Lough Ree / Lough Key/ Lough Allen / Shannon Erne canal and Erne
This tour continues from the 7 night suggested family adventure cruise north of Lough Key. Lough Allen is the next port of call. It is immediately south of the Shannon pot and the lake is overlooked by mountains which has outstanding views and plenty of cycling & walking routes. Drumshambo is located on the canal and is a friendly town with pubs, restaurants, shops, an outdoor swimming pool & tennis court. Lough Allen has plenty of activities and make sure and call to Kevin at the Lough Allen Adventure for kayaking, surfing or windsurfing or a take a guided walk along the Leitrim way and stop off for a well-earned pint in a traditional pub. Shannon Blueway allows guided and unguided paddling and walking along the Lough Allen Canal and Shannon River from Carrick–on Shannon via Leitrim Village and Battlebridge to Drumshanbo. It’s a great experience to see the waterway and there are looped walks to be enjoyed.
Next is the experience of the Shannon Erne Canal, Leitrim is located at the beginning of the canal which is a lovely village with a great choice of restaurants and pubs. Enjoy a romantic dinner on the “Lovely Leitrim” which is a renovated 65ft barge. Hop on a bike from Eileen at the Electric bike trails and explore the hidden areas of Leitrim. Cycle to Arigna mines and experience a great day out for all ages. Talk to Lee at the Leitrim Surf Company and he will bring you a journey of the beautiful Shannon Blueway by stand up paddle boards, a wonderful experience.
It’s time to get the crew busy and operate the 16 automated locks on the canal but you can also relax and enjoy the country villages such as Kescharrigan , Ballinamore, Ballyconnel and Belturbet offering pubs and restaurants and attractions such as horse riding , hill walking, heritage trails to keep all the crew and families entertained.
Lough Erne, along its length from Belturbet to Belleck offer Island dotted lakes & rivers which are a boater’s paradise. Lisnaskea is the second largest town in County Fermanagh and is full of lively pubs, restaurants & activities. A little further downstream and visible from the Lough is Crom Castle estate. This is now open for public viewing and is an exclusive resort. Enniskillen is located in between the upper & lower sections of Lough Erne, the fortress of Enniskillen Castle in the centre of the town is now a museum. The town has an array of entertainment for all the family and activities located on the very long main street. A visit to Marble Arch caves is definitely a must and it will bring you into an underworld of waterfalls, springs, rivers and winding passages. Devenish Island contains one of Ireland’s few complete round towers and is about 1,000 years old. When you enter the Lower Lough Erne there are monastic Islands that can be seen & visited before coming to the town of Belleek which is world famous for its pottery and an ideal opportunity to bring home some of this world renowned pottery.
It will be here that you begin your journey back to Banagher but a wonderful trip full of quality family time and lasting memories.
Family Adventure 7 night South
Route – Banagher & Lough Derg
Commence your cruise at Banagher , explore the shops and restaurants which are less than a 5 minute walk from the marina, stock up with your provisions before boarding your cruiser by shopping at the local big supermarket or if you want to rent some fishing equipment call to Ray at the Old Forge. Take the heritage trail around the town with plenty of interesting buildings and facts. Continue south towards Portumna and stopping off at the idyllic and peaceful Meelick quay for some fishing or just a walk in the countryside. A little further south is the largest lock on the Shannon, Victoria Lock, this is operated by the friendly lock keeper Stephen and he will guide you through the lock.
Continue cruising to Portumna and once you pass through the lifting bridge, it will be the wonderful Lough Derg ahead of you. Stop off at the small harbour in Portumna called Castle Harbour, this is in close proximity to the town and is just south of the bridge, it is located in the grounds of Portumna Castle and Gardens and the Forest park is close by. The park and gardens are great places to explore before heading to the town. Spend some time in the spacious playground located in the town and there is an array of shops, pubs and restaurants and plenty of arts and crafts. For a taste of Irish history visit the Irish workhouse which is located in the town. If its activity for the family try out some paint balling and Go karting from Pallas Karting which is located a short distance outside the town.
On the other side of the lake is the small and quaint village of Terryglass, a wonderful playground close to the harbour and the village is just a short stroll from the marina. Both The Derg Inn and Paddy’s have great cuisine, hospitality and evening entertainment. If you fancy getting wet and trying some water skiing and wakeboarding contact Mark from the watermark ski club and he will have you up on the water in no time. Or if you wish to walk off the dinner from the evening before there are some walking trails around the area.
Kilgarvan is a very small harbour but has a great restaurant called Brocka-on-the-water.
Staying on the Tipperary side of the lake, it will be Dromineer that is your next port of call, whether you decide to stay for lunch or have dinner at the Whiskey still all are within easy reach from the harbour. Make sure and call to Declan at Lough Derg House and the Lake Cafe and he will spoil you with his fresh baking and exceptional food and will give you some great tips. For the children there is a playground beside the harbour and if you fancy some sailing call to Shannon Sailing for some advice.
Hop back on board and cruise to Garrykennedy, this small village offers food and entertainment in Larkin’s pub, famous for its Traditional Irish music session. The lovely harbour offers plenty of picnic benches, a perfect place for a picnic or BBQ and a playground is in close proximity of the harbour to keep the children busy.
The next port of call is Killaloe, a picturesque town on the south end of Lough Derg has plenty of activities for all the family. Whether it is water sports, check out the activity centre of UL sport adventure centre, fishing for Kids or pony trekking you have a wonderful choice. Great pubs and cuisine are on offer in Killaloe and a visit to the Brian Boru Heritage close to the marina traces the life story of Ireland’s greatest High King.
Now making your way back up the lake, it will be Scarriff harbour which is on the Clare side of Lough Derg is the next port of call. Scarriff is a very pretty harbour with pubs and restaurants and the idyllic cruise up the Scarriff River and passing Tuamgraney is definitely worth the adventure. The river is so calm and tranquil that you can nearly touch the fields on each side. Scarriff hosts a festival here every year during the summer months.
Staying on the same side of the lake, continue to Mountshannon and it is here that you can take tours to Holy Island, the Island is located about 2km from Mountshannon and it is 6th century monastic site and guided tours are arranged by Ger Madden. After your tour, explore the town of Mounthshannon by taking a walk in the park which has a playground and a maze that will keep the children entertained for hours.
Continue to cruise back towards Portumna and Banagher taking in the wonderful scenery of Lough Derg on the way home.
Active Adventure 3 nights South
Route- Banagher to Garrykennedy & return
River Shannon & Lough Derg
Starting out from Banagher, explore the shops and restaurants which are less than a 5 minute walk from the marina, stock up with your provisions before boarding your cruiser by shopping at the local big supermarket or. Have a pint of the local beer, Bo Bristle, and if you are spending the night sample the fine cuisine in Flynn’s Bar & Restaurant or The Brosna Lodge or if you want fish & chips call to the Van House for some tasty dishes just at the marina. Enjoy the Irish session and craic in Hough’s pub which is definitely worth a visit and if you are still hungry after all those beers get the best bag of chips in Angelo’s takeaway. If you are after some activity, take time out and shoot some clay pigeons in the local shooting ground at Esker.
Cruise southwards to Portumna where it is here you will meet the picturesque lake of Lough Derg. On this wonderful journey you will pass the largest lock on the River Shannon, Victoria Lock, which is about 40 minutes from Banagher, but don’t worry the friendly lock keeper, Stephen will give you a helping hand. The bridge at Portumna is a lifting bridge and must be opened for all our craft, once you navigate through the bridge at the set opening times it will be the idyllic Lough Derg that will bid you welcome. Just at the beginning of the lake is the small harbour of Portumna which is Castle harbour and is located in close proximity to the town of Portumna. Plenty of pubs, arts and crafts shops and restaurants to keep you busy. For the adrenaline junky, paint balling and Go-Karting are located a few miles outside the town with Pallas Karting.
Cruise across the lake to the quaint village of Terryglass, Paddy’s and the The Derg Inn offers great food, entertainment and hospitality. If you fancy some wakeboarding or water-skiing, get in contact with Mark from Watermark ski club and he will get you up on the water in no time. Terryglass hosts a festival every August which is full of entertainment and action but the harbour gets very busy so get there early.

Fishing and or Golfing 5 night North
Route – Banagher to Hodson Bay/ Glasson & return

Starting out from our base at Banagher, there is plenty to keep you busy while you wait to board your cruiser. Explore the shops and restaurants which are less than a 5 minute walk from the marina, stock up with your provisions before boarding your cruiser by shopping at the local big supermarket and if you want extra fishing equipment call to Ray at the Old Forge, he will provide great fishing advice and ideal spots. No license is required for the Shannon but it is here you can purchase the license for the River Suck and canals. Have a pint of the local beer, Bo Bristle and if you are spending the night sample the fine cuisine in Flynn’s Bar & Restaurant or The Brosna Lodge or if you want fish & chips call to the Van House for some tasty dishes just at the marina. Enjoy the Irish session and craic in Hough’s pub which is definitely worth a visit
Cruise northwards and stop off at Shannonbridge, this is a great location for fishing as you can fish from the boat or hire a dinghy and outboard motor with your cruiser and explore the hidden warm waters or if you have a fishing license take a trip on the River suck which is a fisherman’s paradise. Take a break, grab some pub food in Luker’s or Killeen’s while enjoying a pint of Guinness and chatting to the locals. If you run short of fishing supplies, don’t worry Killeen’s shop have an endless supply and will definitely provide you with recommended fishing spot. There is plenty of evening entertainment available in Shannonbridge to finish the evening off. Before continuing northwards there is also the possibility to cruise along the idyllic River Suck to Ballinasloe, as mentioned previously a great river for fishing but make sure you have the appropriate license. It hosts the oldest horse fair which takes place in October and is an old market town and has plenty of opportunity to shop and visit the pubs & restaurants. Continuing back down the River Suck and upstream it will be the famous world heritage site of Clonmacnoise another great location for fishing and plenty of open space to pop that fish on the BBQ.
Hop back on board and cruise to Athlone, this is where you will have your first experience of a lock. But no need to worry as the all the locks on the Shannon are operated by lock keepers so always there to lend a hand. Athlone is a great town with plenty of choice of great pubs &restaurants. Sean’s bar, the oldest pub in Ireland is conveniently located beside the lock so pop in for a drink and enjoy the evening entertainment.
Now it’s time to replace the fishing rods with the golf clubs and cruise to the lower end of Lough Ree where you will find Hodson Bay, the golf course is only within walking distance to the marina and you can finish off the evening with some food in the Hotel overlooking the harbour. On the other side of the lake , is the spectacular Glasson Hotel & Golf Club , a picturesque golf club overlooking the lake and there is a marina located at the 18th hole , a wonderful place for a round of golf and fine cuisine. Try out their driving range or finish off the evening with a great steak at the renowned Chalet Restaurant in Killinure. There are plenty of other golf courses available along the Shannon if you are fortunate enough to have more time.
It will be here that you begin your journey back to our marina, exploring the wonderful landscape and meandering River that will lead you back to Banagher.
Short Romantic Getaway 3 nights North
Route – Banagher to Hudson Bay / Glasson & return
Commence your cruise at Banagher , explore the shops and restaurants which are less than a 5 minute walk from the marina, stock up with your provisions before boarding your cruiser by shopping at the local big supermarket. Take the heritage trail around the town with plenty of interesting buildings and facts. If you are spending the night you have the lovely choice of Flynn’s Restaurant and the Brosna Lodge offering tasty food, have a pint of the local beer, Bo Bristle, in some of the pubs and enjoy the Irish session and craic in Hough’s pub which is definitely worth a visit.
Cruise to Shannonbridge and enjoy a meal in the romantic setting of the Old Forte Restaurant and enjoy an after dinner drink in Killeen’s or Luker’s pub, great traditional pubs with entertaining evenings. Next port of call with be the famous world Heritage site of Clonmacnoise , stop off and explore the site by taking a tour and watch the audio-visual ,before you head back to the boat stop off at the shop and visitor centre for a browse at some local arts and crafts.
Continue to Athlone taking in the wonderful landscape and the tranquillity of the waterway, it will be here you will encounter your first lock, but don’t worry all the locks on the Shannon are operated by lock keepers. Pop into Sean’s bar for a quick drink, the oldest pub in Ireland which is conveniently located at the lock. Athlone has an abundance of shops, restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and great boutiques you will have difficulty choosing where to go.
If you fancy some pampering continue to Hodson Bay which is just located on the lower end of Lough Ree, get a treatment at the hotel or just relax in the hotel which overlooks the harbour. Just on the opposite side of the lake is the lovely Coosan Point and Killinure Marina and for a special treat have dinner at the Wineport Lodge and Restaurant, the Wineport has mooring facilities on the lake so it makes for a perfect evening before heading on your return journey to Banagher.
Heritage & Culture 4 nights North & South
Route Banagher to Athlone and Portumna
As we are centrally located at Banagher Co. Offaly which is in the centre of Ireland, a visit to the famous Tullamore Dew in Tullamore is a must on your way to our marina which is only about 30 minute drive and a great opportunity to sample the renowned whiskey.
After your experience in Tullamore, commence your cruise from Banagher, there is plenty to keep you busy while you wait to board your cruiser. It will be here that you begin your journey back downstream and in the direction of Portumna, there is another lock which is the largest of the River Shannon, Victoria Lock and is situated about 40 minutes from Banagher. On passing through the bridge at Portumna it will be the lovely Lough Derg the greets you, mooring at the small harbour of Portumna Castle harbour is conveniently located close to the Castle and Gardens and the forest park. This castle was gutted by a fire in 1826 but a great example of Irish architecture of the early 17th century, and the ground floor of the castle is open to the public and houses an exhibition on the history and restoration of the building. In the centre of the town a visit to the Portumna Workhouse is a must, it opened in 1852 and was built for 600 inmates on 8 acres, a very interesting but sad history on life in the workhouse.
It will be here that you meander back to Banagher on the tranquil River Shannon.
