Dublin area
The courses in the Dublin area are an interesting mixture of the old and the new. The most senior course is Royal Dublin, Co. Louth (Baltry) is a fine challenging links, in the traditional sense, and Portmarnock has seen more great events than any other on the Irish mainland, including hosting many Irish Opens, a tribute to a formidable test of golf. Also there is world class Jack Nicklaus Signature Design 18 hole Championship golf course at Killeen Castle Golf Club.
The South
For the golfer, no overview of the great courses would be complete without mention of the mighty links at Ballybunion, where the Old course has brought well-served fame to this pleasant little seaside town. Also close at hand are Tralee (designed by Arnold Palmer) and the charming courses at Killarney, set amidst mountains and lakes, whilst Old Head at Kinsale is a new course rapidly gaining an excellent reputation.
