Why choose a golf trip to Scotland?

Golf in Scotland

With many great golf courses across the world, it can be difficult deciding where to take your next golf trip. You may call us bias, but at Best of Scotland Holidays, we believe that Scotland is the best golfing destination in the world, and this is why…

It’s the home of golf!

Scotland is widely considered as the home of golf as the very first record of golf was in Scotland. The first mention of golf being played in Scotland was in 1476, when James II prohibited golf and football through an Act of Parliament. Most of the world’s oldest courses are also found in Scotland, like St. Andrews Links, thought to be the oldest in the world having been established in the 15th century, and Musselburgh Old Links.

Follow in the steps of golf legends

Scotland has welcomed in many of the world’s most iconic golf legends. You will follow in the footsteps of the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, to name a few, when you play the courses here. Scotland has also produced some world-class players, like Paul Lawrie, Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance OBE.

There are over 500 legendary golf courses to choose from

You’ll find more golf courses in Scotland than anywhere else in the world. There are over 500 legendary courses across the country, making it ideal for touring and ticking off various courses in the one trip. While the majority of these courses are very well-known, there are many hidden gems too, like Glasgow Gailes and the Boat of Garten.

Hosts iconic golf events

Some of the most prestigious golf tournaments in history have taken place in Scotland, such as the first ever Open Championship at Prestwick in 1860 and the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in 2014. 2020’s line-up is looking rather exciting as well, with the AIG Women’s British Open taking place at Royal Troon Golf Club at the end of August and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links at the beginning of October.
