Unwind in Mid Ulster: A Hidden Gem in Northern Ireland

Nestled in the heart of Northern Ireland, Mid Ulster is a true hidden gem filled with history, natural beauty, and local culture. From the ancient archaeological wonders of the Beaghmore Stone Circles to the awe-inspiring Sperrin Mountains, this region offers the perfect break for those looking for adventure and relaxation alike. Whether you’re looking to explore the shores of Lough Neagh, step back in time at the Seamus Heaney HomePlace, or simply enjoy the traditional Irish hospitality, a visit to the Mid Ulster region promises to be an unforgettable experience. Our latest blog dives into the best kept secrets of this area and how you can make the most of a visit there.

The Clogher Valley

Situated in County Tyrone, the Clogher Valley is a place where time stands still, where the hills are home to ancient churches, and where the rivers wind their way through the landscapes. Here is where Mid Ulster’s rich culture and natural beauty takes centre stage. Following the course of the River Blackwater, the valley is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking for hiking trails, fishing, or birdwatching, this region has something to offer for everyone. Ballygawley is where history comes alive. Here, you can trace the ancestry of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. Visit the heritage cottage on-site or book a tour led by a costumed guide portraying Grant himself, who will share stories of his family’s journey from rural Tyrone to the White House. For a more elegant day out, visit Blessingbourne Estate in Filemiletown. This historic home, still occupied by the family, is a treasure trove of days gone by. However, it’s not all about the history, outdoor adventurers can try out the estate’s famous mountain bike trails.

The Giants of the Sperrins

Ireland is a land of ancient legend, and the Giants of the Sperrins Sculpture Trail is a must-visit for those seeking art, folklore, and natural beauty. These towering sculptures, made from recycled wood and designed by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, rise from the landscape like guardians of the area, their presence both commanding and enchanting. Among them is Ceoldán, the Stargazer, kneeling on a timber boardwalk in Davagh Forest near Cookstown. He symbolises the link between ancient mythology and the wonders of the cosmos. His name – derived from the Irish words Ceol (music) and Dán (poem) – embodies the harmony between nature, storytelling, and the night sky. This sculpture trail, partly in Mid Ulster, transports visitors back in time to an era of Celtic and Neolithic mythology, ancient legends, celestial wonders, and breathtaking scenery.

Beaghmore Stone Circles

The Beaghmore Stone Circles lie in the heart of Mid Ulster. A prehistoric site shrouded in mystery, it was discovered in the 1930s during peat cutting. These seven stone circles, ten rows of stones, and twelve cairns date back to the Neolithic era. Archaeologists believe the formations may have been constructed to track celestial events, with some stone rows aligned to the midsummer sunrise and others pointing to the lunar and solar movements. We’re not quite sure what these stone circles are – an ancient observatory? A scared site for rituals? Either way, you can stand among these ancient stones, gaze to the sky and reflect – just as the people who built them did thousands of years ago.

OM Dark Sky Park

For an out-of-this-world experience, step into OM Dark Sky Park and Observatory, Northern Ireland’s only certified Dark Sky destination. Here, a 3.4km Solar Walk connects visitors to both the night sky above and the ancient astronomical alignments of Beaghmore Stone Circles. At OM Observatory, you will experience holographic displays, virtual reality tours, and interactive exhibits that bring the solar system to life. As night falls, state-of-the-art telescopes offer crystal-clear views of star constellations, planets, and the Milky Way, all free from any light pollution. Whether you’re an amateur astronomer or simply seeking a moment of wonder, this is the perfect place to slow down and lose yourself in the magic of the universe.
