When it comes to exploring the United Kingdom, there’s no better way to experience the breathtaking sights that surround than by sitting back, relaxing, and letting someone else do the driving on one of the UK’s many railway adventures. The UK’s railway network is one of the best established in the world and has become cemented in our history and culture. With the first steam locomotive being debuted in the Welsh mining town of Merthyr Tydfil in 1804 and the first electric train being built by Robert Davidson in Aberdeen in 1837, it’s safe to say that the UK has been a pioneer of railway development.
For our overseas clients, we have compiled a list of the must-do railway journeys in the UK. Journeys that will take you between some of our most bustling cities, to visit quaint countryside villages, and to see spectacular landscapes that may otherwise be inaccessible via other transport methods.
The Jacobite Steam Train

Perhaps the most famous train journey in the UK, also known as the “Hogwarts Express”, the Jacobite Steam Train is extremely popular amongst Harry Potter fans owing to its starring role in the films. You will embark on an 84-mile round trip through the Scottish Highlands, one of the most scenic regions in the UK. You will pass famous landmarks such as the highest mountain the UK, Ben Nevis, and the deepest freshwater body in the UK, Loch Morar, before crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct where panoramic views of the mountains will open up around you. This is a magical experience for not just Harry Potter fans, but also history buffs and nature lovers alike. We recommend booking in advance for this journey as it is extremely popular, and spaces fill up very fast all year round.

The Great Highland Railway

The Kyle Railway Line is often celebrated as one of the world’s most scenic train journeys. It runs for 57 miles from coast to coast across the Scottish Highlands, starting in Inverness, the heart of the Highlands. This route has a bit of everything including mountains, moorlands, lochs, and coastline before reaching the charming village of Kyle of Lochalsh. Here, you will be rewarded with spectacular views across to the Isle of Skye. Some highlights of the journey are gazing across to the Torridon peaks, the shores of Loch Carron, and the bay of Plockton. Plockton itself is known as the ‘jewel of the Highlands’ and is a pretty little village that is well worth the visit along the way. This journey takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, and you will be well entertained by the stunning Highland scenery.
Mount Snowdown (Yr Wyddfa) Railway

Thousands of people each year reach the summit of Wales’ tallest peak, often spending up to 7 hours trekking up the mountain on foot. If hiking isn’t your thing, but you’d still like to admire the wonderful views that surround the Mount Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) summit, then you may want to take a journey on one of the world’s most unique railways. You will travel on a traditional Diesel locomotive from Llanberis Station all the way to the very top of the mountain where you will enjoy some time at Hafod Eryri, the world’s highest visitor centre at 1,085m above sea level. Here you’ll find a café, gift shop, and breathtaking views as far as Ireland on a clear day. The British mountains are some of the most remote and barren landscapes in the country, so visiting this high-altitude haven is a truly unforgettable experience!
The UK’s diverse railway network offers something for everyone.
