8 Great Adventure Activities in Ireland

Break from your regular routine and come out to play. Ireland is well equipped for outdoor adventure and UK activity holidays.  With miles of walking and cycling trails, adrenaline pumping sports such as white-water rafting and rock climbing, and fantastic golf and fishing, there’s a great choice of activities to suit all visitors to the Emerald Isle.

If you’re a couple looking for an activity break, a solo traveller wanting outdoor adventure or a family seeking a multi activity holiday, Ireland has plenty of activities on offer. Take a look at some of our favourites:

Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge, co Antrim, Northern Ireland

Carrick-a-Rede is a small island just off the main coast in Northern Ireland. Once considered the best spot for catching salmon, it is now a major tourist attraction but not one for the faint of heart. To reach the tiny island, visitors must cross a rope bridge that is 66ft long and sits 98ft above the rocks and sea below. The journey across this narrow bridge is well worth it for the views on the other side though!

Basecamp Action-Adventure Park in co Limerick, Republic of Ireland

Located in the heart of Co. Limerick, our 80-acre outdoor adventure park offers a range of activities including forest 3D archery, paintball, splatball, survival challenges and bushcraft. For the adventurer, Basecamp’s bushcraft experience might be of particular interest as it allows participants to get back to their natural roots and learn some key ancient skills including water retrieval and purification, shelter-building and fire-lighting.

Blessingbourne Mountain Bike Trails in co Tyrone, Northern Ireland

Located on a private estate that spans over 550 acres the 13k of trails caters for mountain bikers of all ages and abilities. As one of one of Northern Ireland’s premier Mountain Biking, you’ll find a range of wide flowing blue trails and more technical red trails packed full of exciting trail features such as berms, log rides and rock drops.

Game of Thrones Archery Experience at Castle Ward in co Down, Northern Ireland

Visit the site that the Game of Thrones series used to create ‘Winterfell’ and have your own GoT moment. You’ll have the chance to not only dress up in costume, but also try your hand at archery. See if you can achieve the thrill of hitting a bullseye!

Climb Ireland’s Highest Peak at Carrauntoohil in Co Kerry, Republic of Ireland

There are three different routes to the top that you can choose from, with the most popular being known as the Devil’s Ladder Route. Hitting 1,039m this is the highest peak in Ireland and well worth a visit for any dedicated hillwalkers.

Experience the Winter Solstice at Newgrange in Co Meath, Republic of Ireland

This 5,000 year old tomb predates the pyramids of Giza and Stonehenge, yet it is a marvel of early astronomy for managing to perfectly aligning with the winter solstice sun. At dawn on and around the winter solstice, a narrow beam of light enters the 62-foot long passage and lights the floor. It moves along the ground, from the window box until it lights the rear chamber. The whole process is over in just 17 minutes but is highly dramatic to watch.

Dive off Forty Foot at Christmas in Co Dublin, Republic of Ireland

Taking a dip in the cold water on Christmas Day at forty foot is a tradition that apparently dates back about 250 years. Large groups of people gather along the coast and will jump or walk into the waters for a brief, freezing swim. Certainly only for those with an adventurous spirit, don’t forget to bring something to warm you up after your swim is done!

Wild Cooking in Co Clare, Republic of Ireland

For those interested on local flora and who love the idea of foraging for your own food, consider taking a wild cooking tour. On these walks you’ll learn to identify some plants, what’s in season what to avoid and get to taste some of the wild plants. Wild Kitchen, the group that runs these tours, is a member of the Burren Eco-Tourism network, and is a member of the award winning Burren Food Trail.
