5 of the Most Breathtaking Golf Courses in Ireland

The South West of Ireland is home to some of the most stunning natural links courses in the world, all of which are within close driving distance of each other and feature some truly spectacular scenery.

Not only that, but the area is home to some lovely towns and local tourist destinations that can round out a fantastic experience along the Irish coast.

So, if you’ve been thinking of taking a golfing trip to the Emerald Isle, here are some of the most spectacular courses you should be paying a visit.

Lahinch Golf Course, Co. Clare

Described by some as the “St. Andrews of Ireland”, this course is well regarded as being able to change with the times while still retaining its original charm and enjoyable level of challenge. Not only that, but the course is only a short while away from the iconic Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland’s most dramatic natural features and a spot frequented by tourists from all over the world. If the local landscape alone wasn’t enough, then Lahinch’s fantastic course and clubhouse are sure to seal the deal and make this a must-visit spot for any golfer.

Ballybunion Golf Course, Co. Kerry

No list of the great golf courses in Ireland would be complete without mention of the fantastic links at Ballybunion, where the famous Old Course has brought quite a bit of prestige to the pleasant seaside town. The club has in the past played host to the Murphys Irish Open and the Palmer Cup and is frequently regarded as one of the top-rated courses in the world. Local sights and destinations include the Ring of Kerry, Killarney National Park and the beautiful harbour town of Kenmare, making it the perfect setting for some coastal adventures during your stay.

Tralee Golf Course, Co. Kerry

A stone’s throw from the Ballybunion course, the links at Tralee features towering dunes, undulating fairways, punishing rough and cliff top tees and greens. Designed by world famous golfer Arnold Palmer and opened in 1984, this 18-hole course presents an exciting challenge against a breathtaking backdrop along the Atlantic coast. As Palmer himself said: “I have never come across a piece of land so ideally suited for the building of a golf course”. Hopefully when you play on the iconic links yourself, you’ll feel the same.

Waterville Links, Co. Kerry

Another one of Ireland’s fantastic natural links, this course will both challenge and amaze you, while the village of Waterville itself is home to many charming pubs and restaurants, as well as being the starting point for boat tours out to the majestic Skellig Islands. This year marked the completion of the final phase of the clubhouse’s renovation, which has included a major reconfiguration of the front entrance, dining and bar area, locker rooms and new golf shop. Make sure to visit Waterville Links as part of any golfing trip to the southern Irish coast.

Old Head Golf Links, Co. Cork

Situated on a spectacular headland stretching out two miles into the Atlantic, this links course at the Old Head of Kinsale is one of the most iconic in the world, and a must-visit destination for any golfer. Whether you come for the luxurious member’s clubhouse, challenging course, beautiful flora and fauna or the stunning geology, you’re sure to find your golfing sanctuary at Old Head. While you’re there, you can also explore the rest of County Cork; home to whale watching, Fota Wildlife Park and Blarney Castle.

Any one of these courses would make for an amazing destination for any golfer, but with our South West Ireland golf package, you can experience several all in one trip.
