When travelling with children you want to find a holiday destination with plenty of activities to keep the whole family on their feet. Wales is the ideal holiday destination for families because there is just so much to do. From zoo visits to fun walking trails, pony-trekking to riding a mountain railway, check out our list of 5 fun activities to try out in Wales when travelling with kids.

See the animals at the Welsh Mountain Zoo

A visit to a zoo always makes the perfect family day out, especially when it’s Welsh Mountain Zoo, the oldest and most established Zoo in Wales. Welsh Mountain Zoo covers 37 acres of beautiful green landscape overlooking Colwyn Bay and the Carneddau mountains in the north of Wales. Over 140 species live at the zoo, including big cats, primates, birds, reptiles and many more. Open almost every day of the year, the zoo has welcomed over eight million visitors to date. If you are travelling by car, you can reach here in just 30 minutes from Bangor and 40 minutes from Caernarfon, or, there’s options for public transport too.

Alice in Wonderland trail in Llandudno

It can be difficult to get out walking when you’ve got little ones, but it won’t be when there’s a bit of fun involved. The Alice in Wonderland trail in Llandudno is the perfect walking trail for little legs. Just pick up a trail map from the tourist information centre or download the app and follow the footsteps of the white rabbit to find the special Alice in Wonderland features that are scattered across the town. The town of Llandudno has a connection to Alice in Wonderland as, accordingly, this is where the real Alice of the Lewis Carroll book would visit on holiday.

Pony-trekking in Snowdonia

Pony-trekking is a unique and leisurely way to experience the beautiful scenery of Snowdonia. The Snowdonia Riding Stables offer 1-hour countryside trots suitable for all levels and children over the age of four. Or, for more experienced riders, there is the option to enjoy mountain rides up into the hills and across the open mountain. There are numerous riding stables and centres across this area, each offering something for everyone’s ability and taste!

Ride the Brecon Mountain Railway

Journey into the Brecon Beacons National Park on the Brecon Mountain Railway locomotive. The ride will take you into the National Park, through Pontsticill and along the full length of the Taf Fechan Reservoir before ascending to Torpantau high in the Brecon Beacons and the summit of the original line. This is one of the most popular and enjoyable railway lines in Wales thanks to its stunning scenery. Children even have the opportunity to visit Santa and ride the railway to Santa’s grotto over the Christmas period.

Cardiff International White Water

Looking for something a little more adventurous? Head to Cardiff International White Water, an Olympic standard white water rafting centre based at the Cardiff International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay. The centre became the first on-demand white water centre in the UK when it opened in 2010. Family activities for groups of all ages who wish to ride the rapids together are available. The centre also offers other activities including canoeing and off-site activities such as gorge walking and surfing.
