Golf in Northern Ireland and Dublin
Northern Ireland is a golfers playground. Once out of the hustle and bustle of Belfast, life assumes a quieter pace seeming to recall an earlier, more leisurely age, in an area rich in scenic beauty and golf courses.
Of the golf courses in Northern Ireland, two stand out, both being championship courses in the classic mould. Close to the remarkable Giant’s Causeway, lies Royal Portrush, which hosted an Open in the early 50’s, and will now host it again in July 2019, and of course Royal County Down, nestled in the foot of the Mountains of Mourne.
Dublin
The courses in the Dublin area are an interesting mixture of the old and the new. The most senior course is Royal Dublin, Co. Louth (Baltry) is a fine challenging links, in the traditional sense, and Portmarnock has seen more great events than any other on the Irish mainland, including hosting many Irish Opens, a tribute to a formidable test of golf. The course at the Portmarnock Hotel also gives an interesting round, whilst there are some excellent new courses also claiming their share of the limelight – The European Club, Mount Juliet, Druid’s Glen and the K Club. Also there is world class Jack Nicklaus Signature Design 18 hole Championship golf course at Killeen Castle Golf Club.
